Going Dutch
A modular hotel arrives on the West Coast, courtesy of Gensler and concrete Amsterdam

O

ver the summer, Dutch hotel and lifestyle company
citizenM unveiled an expansive app, allowing guests to
do things like check-in, regulate the temperature of their
rooms, and order food in a safe, contactless format that is paramount
in the pandemic era. The technology also coincided with the arrival
of the brand's 20th hotel, a LEED Gold-certified standout in Seattle's
South Lake Union neighborhood.
A collaboration between executive architect Gensler Seattle and
longtime citizenM architecture and interior design partner concrete
in Amsterdam, the 264-room property was, "to our knowledge, the
first volumetric modular steel building built in a seismic location,"
says Ben McGhee, project manager at citizenM Hotels. "citizenM
often builds modularly, but this presented new structural challenges
in the design, permitting, and construction."

At just 160 square feet, each compact citizenM guestroom is
stylish and functional, "with the unique touch of a wall-to-wall window
offering bedside views," points out Sukyee Pang, technical director
at Gensler Seattle, and outfitted with custom carpets flaunting a
composite of the city's landmarks "tailored to help tell a story about
Seattle." All guests' interior lighting adjustments are also expressed
on the kinetic façade.
Further enlivening the exterior is a 78-foot-wide mural by local
artist Jesse LeDoux, former art director at Sub Pop Records, that
wraps the building in bright shades of pink and green and "reflects
the essence of Seattle," says McGhee. "Underneath the nearconstant blanket of gray clouds, you find a constantly evolving city-
from sleepy logging town, to loud music mecca, to tech hub."
