EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND DIVERSITY

New year, same problems, new opportunities

Happy New Year everyone!
I know that many of us are marveling at the fact that we
survived 2020. Collectively, we made it through one of the
toughest times most of us can remember. And even with a
new year, there are elements of it that...feel the same. Feel
familiar. We are still experiencing a global pandemic that has
disrupted our lives, we are still grieving the loss of income, the
loss of family and friends, the loss of routine and our favorite
activities. Recently, we witnessed how differently people of
color in our country are being treated. With all of this though,
we should feel a sense of hope, a sense of gratefulness, and
a sense of opportunity.

Taking what I learned in 2020, I plan to apply it to 2021.
New year, same problems, new opportunities. We have an
opportunity before us all now, to be better friends, colleagues,
and citizens. How, you ask? By being better allies. I shared a
bit of the allyship journey at NEWH's Equity, Inclusion, and
Diversity Dialogue earlier this month. Allyship is the practice
of emphasizing social justice, inclusion, and human rights
by members of an ingroup, to advance the interests of an
oppressed or marginalized outgroup. Allyship is part of the
anti-oppression or anti-racist conversation, which puts into
use social justice theories and ideals. That's a lot to digest
but in its simplest form, allyship is impactful on many levels
and it's an active practice that I believe can make our world a
better place. One person, one act at a time.
First, continue to be curious about the challenges
people outside of your immediate community are facing.
AWARENESS of the barriers to success or equality is an
essential step in allyship. Take this pandemic as an example.
While I am grateful that I have a home, employment, and
generally healthy family and friends, I know that other
people aren't as lucky. I've read how people in lower-income
