Guyana's political stability has since helped support a campaign
of economic liberalization that began in the 1990s, when the
People's Progressive Party consolidated its position as the
country's dominant political force.
During the period 2006 to 2012, foreign direct investment
trended upward, amounting to over US$1.3 billion, with Guyana
being the only country in the region with a consistent annual
growth rate in excess of 4.8%. This period of growth and low
inflation extends to this day, with the government - which
is structured as a republican representative system with an
elected National Assembly - using public finances to invest in
both people and infrastructure.

The Right People, the Right Tools
When addressing the United Nations General Assembly in
2013, the President of Guyana, Donald Ramotar, asserted that
the socio-economic health and well-being of Guyana was built
on its diverse demographic mix. Guyana is home to a dynamic
combination of ethnic groups, with citizens of East Indian and
African descent making up the majority of the population.
"Our people remain the most important factor, Ramotar told

the United Nations. "That is why my own country has been
investing increasingly in our people's development.

An examination of our national budget would reveal that some
30 percent of our expenditure goes to the social sector.

That said, people need the right tools, and infrastructure
has not gone unnoticed. Guyana's main airport in the capital
city, Georgetown, which has daily flights to Miami and New
York, is in the midst of a runway and terminal expansion to
accommodate wide body aircraft.
