Investigators reported that the fire
began on a small table near a sliding
door to a balcony, where incense was
left burning in an unattended container
and spread to a curtain. The fire began
slowly and took time to activate the
automatic alarm system.
The building was constructed with
concrete walls, floors, and roof, with
a concave roof covered by asphalt.
The building occupied a ground floor
area of 18,480 square feet (1,717 square
meters).
Twelve units were reported to have
sustained smoke or water damage from
the fire. No information was available
on dollar losses from the fire.
ALABAMA
Three die in fire ignited by kitchen
range used for heating
Three people died in a fire that began in
the overnight hours when a range used
for heating ignited combustible materials
and spread through the interior.
The fire department was dispatched
to the residence when a neighbor
called 911 at 4:30 a.m. Arriving crews
reported a haze and smell of smoke,
but no visible flames showing from
the structure. Crews made a forcible
entry at a side entryway and a
large volume of smoke and heat were
released as soon as the door was
breached.
Crews pulled a hose at the doorway
at the side of the house as interior
crews made entry. One occupant was
found near the entrance and immediately
removed.
Search-and-rescue efforts continued
inside the structure, and a second
victim was found in a bathroom at the
far end of the residence. Crews knocked
down the fire from a side window and
moved inside to complete extinguishment.
A third victim was found in the
front room.
Medical crews attempted to resuscitate
the victims, but none of them
responded. All three victims died as a
result of smoke-inhalation injuries.
Investigators determined that the fire
originated in the area of the kitchen
range and extended to other parts of
the kitchen, which sustained most of
the damage. There was heavy smoke
damage throughout the interior of the
residence.
Investigators concluded that the
range was being used to heat the residence
when it ignited unspecified
combustible materials.
No estimates were available on monetary
damage from the fire.
