were found in the living room. One of
the victims found in the bedroom was
believed to be on the second floor prior
to its collapse.
Investigators determined that
the fire broke out on an open porch
and spread into and throughout the
home. The cause was listed as undetermined.
It was not determined if
there were smoke alarms present.
There was no automatic suppression
equipment.
The residence was a two-story,
single-family home of unprotected
wood-frame construction and had a
floor area of 1,300 square feet (120
square meters).
WEST VIRGINIA
Suspicious house fire kills six,
including five children
Five children and one adult were killed
in an afternoon house fire. The cause
of the fire was under investigation,
but news reports indicated that the
remains of the residence were being
treated as a crime scene.
Fire departments from several communities
responded to the fire, which
was reported at 3:30 p.m. The state fire
marshal's office and law enforcement
also responded to the scene, according
to news reports. Media photos indicated
that the residence was consumed
by the fire.
News reports indicated that the children
were found inside the structure
and the adult victim was found outside
the home.
The residence was a two-story,
single-family home of unprotected
wood-frame construction. The ground
floor area was not reported.
CONNECTICUT
Challenging fire in large apartment
building forces evacuation
Firefighters called to a late-night fire
in an apartment building faced significant
challenges as they contended with
rooftop solar panels atop the threestory
structure.
Crews were dispatched to the fire at
approximately 11:30 p.m. The local fire
department was joined by seven mutual
aid departments in the response.
The fire chief reported that the fire
ran through a void space above the ceiling
and that crews needed to pull away
walls in order to expose and extinguish
the fire. News reports indicated that
crews worked into the early hours
before completing extinguishment.
The fire department reported that
an array of solar panels on the building
roof hindered firefighter access to roof
activities and limiting walkable areas
to perform ventilation operations. The
additional weight of the panels raised
concerns of potential roof collapse, and
crews had to ensure that the panels
were not energized.
Nearly 60 apartment units had to
be evacuated from the complex and
approximately 100 residents were
