9.5 deaths per 1,000 reported fires was
33 percent higher than in 1980.
Only 9 percent of reported fires and 3
percent of reported fire deaths in 2021
were caused by nonhome structure fires.
There were 23,000 nonhome residential
structure fires (2 percent), including
fires in hotels and motels, dormitories,
rooming houses, residential board and
care, and unclassified residential fires,
which caused 40 deaths (1 percent). The
125,500 nonresidential structure fires (9
percent) caused 130 deaths (3 percent).
These properties tend to be the most
tightly regulated. The NFPA report " US
Experience with Sprinklers " shows that
fires in nonhome and nonresidential
structures were more likely to have
occurred in properties protected by
sprinklers than fires in homes.
An estimated 208,500 vehicle fires
caused 680 civilian fire deaths,
1,500 civilian fire injuries, and $2.2
billion in direct property damage in

Nearly half of reported fires (49 percent)
were outside or categorized as
" other. " One out of five (20 percent)
of reported fires in 2020 was a brush,
grass, or wildland fire that did not result
in a dollar loss. Additionally, 17 percent
were outside rubbish fires; 6 percent
were outside, nonstructure, nonvehicle
fires involving property of value; and 6
percent were other or unclassified fires.

departments that answered the 2021
National Fire Experience Survey and
made this analysis possible. Each year,
the NFPA fire experience survey is sent
to all local fire departments protecting
populations of at least 5,000, and a
random sample of smaller departments.

produce reliable national estimates.

Fatal Work Injuries Caused by
Exposure to Electricity in 2020

A
ccording to an NFPA report on electrical injuries at work, 126
workers in the US were fatally injured in 2020 as a result of exposure
to electricity. Hispanic workers, who comprised 18 percent of the
employed population in 2020, accounted for two in five (40 percent)
of the victims. The report cited other research documenting higher
work injury rates among Hispanic workers than the general worker population.
The report also found that private residences were the leading location of fatal electrical
injuries, followed by industrial premises and streets or highways. The report
noted that work safety requirements can be difficult to enforce when they occur in
remote locations, such as homes or streets. The report utilized data from the Census
of Occupational Injuries, sponsored by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, to identify
electrical fatalities by occupation, employment status, location of injury event,
worker activities at time of injury, and other factors.
