ON THE INTERSTATE
In April, a generous Oregon
man with apparently too
much cash and not enough
common sense tossed an
estimated $200,000 in $100
bills out his car window and
onto a busy interstate near
the city of Eugene. Once
drivers realized that Benjamins
were flying around on
Interstate 5, motorists in both
directions started pulling
over to scoop up as many of
the bills as they could carry as
other vehicles whizzed past.
The I-5 benefactor, Davis
McCarthy, 38, stopped his
impromptu philanthropy only
when state police threatened
to charge him with littering and
creating a hazard on the highway.
McCarthy told officers he
was " doing well and wanted
to bless others with gifts of
money. " According to news
reports, the money is believed
to have come from the shared
bank account-now empty-of
McCarthy's family.
THE CLAAAW
There must have been some
very sweet plushies inside that
claw machine at Carowinds
amusement park in North
Carolina. In April, a 13-year-old
boy had to be rescued from
the Cosmic XL Bonus Game at
the park after he wiggled his
way into the machine hoping
to score a prize.
A medical response team
arrived to unlock the attraction
and let the boy out. He was
evaluated and treated for undisclosed
injuries, then released to
his guardians, a spokeswoman
for the park said.
It will be a while before the
youngster can return to try to
win the prize that captured
his fancy-he's been banned
from the park for one year for
attempted theft.
HOT COUTURE
Attendees at Paris Fashion
Week are likely to see just
about anything on the runways,
including models with
their outfits on fire. That
was part of the collection
exhibited by the Copenhagen-based
streetwear label
Heliot Emil, which presented
its fall winter 2023-2024
line in Paris in late February.
Most of the collection
rocked an industrial, we'redoomed-let's-party
aesthetic,
executed in white, gray, and
black. The capper, though,
was an all-black, oversized,
hooded ensemble that was
partly aflame as the model
strode down the runway,
accompanied by a thudding,
ominous soundtrack-imagine
a fashion-forward Grim
Reaper who'd gotten a bit too
close to his burning trash pile.
Founded by brothers Julius
and Victor Juul and named for
their great-grandfather, the
label aspires to something
more than seasonal collections
of clothing. " What we
try to create is more like a
universe that conveys this
idea of what we call industrial
elegance, " said Victor in a
recent interview with glamcult.com.
" Everything from
furniture to luxury fashion to
soundscapes...trends come
and go, but we just want to
stick to our own identity and
universe that encapsulates
this aesthetic. "
UNICORN PERMIT GRANTED
For anyone frustrated by red tape, here's a valuable lesson:
sometimes the quickest way to get what you want is to write a
really cute letter.
That's what a six-year old girl named Madeline did, and officials
in Los Angeles quickly granted her request for permission
to keep a unicorn in her backyard.
" Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have
a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me
a letter in response, " she wrote to the Los Angeles County
Department of Animal Care and Control.
Department Director Maria Mayeda wrote back granting
Madeline the unicorn license under conditions that include
" polishing the unicorn's horn at least once a month with a soft
cloth, feeding it watermelon (one of its favorite treats) at least
once a week, covering it with only nontoxic and biodegradable
sparkles, and giving it regular access to sunlight, moonbeams,
and rainbows, " according to NPR.
The " preapproved unicorn license " came on a pink certificate
along with a heart-shaped tag engraved with the words
" permanent unicorn license. "
