TRIAL PHASES:
New treatments move progressively through 3 main
phases of clinical trials before they can be prescribed
and marketed.

Phase 1 is a small, ï¬rst-in-human study to
identify the drug dose.
Phase 2 is a larger study to test efï¬cacy.
Phase 3 involves the largest number of patients and
is designed to show whether the treatment is better
than the standard treatment.

INFORMED CONSENT
Informed consent is a process through which
you learn all the details about the trial by
asking questions, reviewing documents, and
speaking with the research team before
deciding whether to take par t. It is impor tant
to know it is your right to leave the study at
any time and for any reason. You are NEVER
required to par ticipate in a clinical trial and
can stop whenever you choose to do so, even
after signing the informed consent document.

PLACEBOS: IT'S NOT WHAT
YOU MIGHT THINK
Patients sometimes express fear around trials
because they not want to receive a placebo (a
sham treatment ). It is impor tant to know that
modern cancer trials almost NEVER use
placebos as this would be unethical. If you
might get a placebo, this will always be
explained during the consent process.
