JEN'S CORNER

My
in Review
Pandemic. Isolating. Weird. Words to *try* to maybe
describe a bit about 2020. Connections. Resilience.
Adapting. Also words for 2020.

I

see so many memes about how 2021 will be a reset. Life will be " normal " again, whatever
that means. But somehow, I don't think the magical midnight strike will restore our
pre-mask pre-pandemic lives. 2020 was H.A.R.D. Not since active treatment have I ever
felt so alone and isolated. Even despite cancer, this is the first time I didn't get to celebrate
Easter or my Mom's birthday with her. I can only hope that 2021 is easier, but I doubt it.
From previous posts, you may remember I'm not a fan of new year's resolutions. Instead,
I typically choose a few intentions or words for my year. Most of that went out the window
in the first quarter, but I accomplished a few things.
* My goal was to read 12 books- 1/month. I finished with 13!!
* I wanted to move more- I walked 2 5ks virtually this year.
* I hate how I sound in videos, but through the pandemic I started a " quarantine cooking " series on my insta.

Lest you get discouraged, I also did the following:
* Binged too many TV shows to count, including
Community for the first time, and The Office
for the millionth.
* Watched a dozen Disney movies.
* Made a Friday night tradition of cocktails and
movies with my roomie.
* Ate an entire large pizza by myself in a single day.
Everyone lists the terrible parts of 2020, but I want to
list some of the good that came for me:
* My true friends reached out to me. They're scattered across the US, but through Zoom calls, FB
messenger, and DoorDash, they showed me that
they STILL are by my side.
* Other friends stepped up. At one point I was
invited to more Zoom game nights than I knew
what to do with! I'm very grateful for the cancer
muggles who reached out to include me in a few
Jackbox games.
* Online connections. I've been able to connect via
various IG accounts to probably a dozen cancer
peeps across the US. Whether it's commiserating
over hair loss, or side effects, or just realizing
that we are all isolated together.
2021 is only two weeks old, and already told 2020
to hold its beer. Sometimes it feels overwhelming
to think of another year, more craziness politically,
medically and socially. My words for 2021 are discipline and community. Discipline to wake up and
show up every day. To take care of myself the best
I can physically. Community to take care of myself
emotionally and mentally. Surrounding myself with
people who love and care for me, and cutting the
toxic out of my life. Community to me also means
reaching out to others, and supporting others who
are struggling.
I don't know what this year holds, and frankly
none of us do. But I know there is an amazing and
supportive group of people here at Elephants and
Tea, more online communities and virtual events
than ever before, and at the very least, I'm always
here to DM if you're in a tough spot. Here's to
keeping on and carrying on! l
