Making Treatment Decisions
STAGE FOUR
Struggles of Stage Four

competing in music and science events,
and spending a fun summer working-all
these plans suddenly evaporated in the
space of eight days. The good cancer had
done me dirty.
I was stage 4. I remember the doctors
telling me how all cancers are staged differently,
and stage 4 wasn't necessarily a
death sentence, but it was more serious. It
meant things were going to move quickly,
and there might be extra rounds of chemo,
maybe extra radiation, and possibly not
enough time for ferti lity treatments. It
meant no time for me to process that my
life was forever changed.
In the blur between diagnosis and startS

there is a pathology report that has my
name written on it. The above sentences included.
My cancer diagnosis.
Tuesday, at my annual pediatrician visit,
I told her about the growing lumps under
my arms and chin. Her face blanched as
she palpated one of them, before she called
in the head of the practice. The chest X-ray
on the way home that afternoon showed
a 10-inch mass in my lungs. How was I
even breathing?
Wednesday morning found me getting
my PET and CT scans. Wednesday evening
found my parents, two of my closest siblings,
and I clustered around a phone on a coffee

table as the pediatrician confirmed it was
cancer. Thursday at the hospital, people said
I had the " good " cancer. The cancer, if you
had to choose, everyone would choose. I
believed it. I was happy to be the lucky one
with the " good cancer. " But was it really?
The following Wednesday I had surgery to
put in my port, and two hours later, I began
chemo. Suddenly, the " good cancer " wasn't
so good. It was all such a blur with little time
to process or adjust. A normal, 17-year-old
teenage dream of going to college that fall,
ing treatment that only spanned eight days,
I remember meeting with a gynecological
team and discussing fertility preservation
along with my parents. Their timeline was
only a few weeks until they could proceed
with an egg harvest, but I didn't have a few
weeks because I was stage 4 and wanted to
start treatment right away. The conversations
were brief. Phone calls taken as I sat
in-patient, getting blood transfusions. Short
visits from the team as they rotated in and
out of my room, making my head spin with
their information. To this day, I remember
aspects of their faces, my mind has their
features seared into my brain. I can't hear
their voices, or remember what they said, but
I remember their black hair, long eyelashes,
glasses, and steely green eyes.
I wanted to have kids all my life. I'm the
oldest of seven kids. Once, I wrote in my
journal that I wanted 32 children. I was
crazy, I know. But being a mom, and having
a family seemed part of my DNA. But I
remember my mom saying how she would
rather have me alive now, than delay treatment
and have an uncertain future. She
said that having children wasn't something
a 17-year-old needed to concern herself
