Making Treatment Decision
AS A CAREGIVER
I found 30 some trials, and a few relevant
ones, for stage 4 HL.
It does take some time and effort to narrow
down and read about each trial, but I would
read and print them, and take them with
me to ask my doctor about possible clinical
trials that were available to obtain the best
possible treatment for my loved one. Below
are some helpful pointers:
* All the trials have so many conditions that
you can review and either eliminate ones
that won't work for yourself or your doctor
or nurse can eliminate them for you.
EXAMPLES
OF SOME
One of the key factors in choosing where to
get treated is to look for a place that treats a
large number of patients for cancer, and even
the specific type of cancer. Look for a place
that has facilities for advanced treatments
and one that runs clinical trials. Usually, a
teaching and research University-affiliated
hospital will be your best bet, even if you must
drive an hour away, as was the case for us.
2. CLINICAL TRIALS
In considering treatment options mentioned in
the PDQ, we are given an option for new treatments
being developed and current treatments
being improved all the time. When we were
looking at it seven years ago, we did not have
immunotherapy or targeted therapy or even
proton beam radiation therapy. It is available
today and finding out what clinical trials are
available for your type of cancer, stage and age
is another important option to explore with
your healthcare provider when deciding treatment
for your loved one.
Following is an example I used to find
available clinical trials:
Click " Find a clinical trial, " and enter
" Hodgkin lymphoma. " It returned almost
600 trials, and by entering the patient's age
as 17, I was able to narrow it down to 126. I
can narrow it down further by entering my
city and state. Not all trials are relevant, and

TERMINOLOGY
Epidemiology: The study
(scientific, systematic,
and data-driven) of the
distribution (frequency,
pattern) and determinants
(causes, risk factors) of
health-related states and
events (not just diseases)
in specified populations
(neighborhood, school, city,
state, country, global).
Histology: The study of the
microscopic structure of
tissues, such as cancel cells
to help with diagnosis
Asymptomatic: Without any
symptoms
Adenopathy: Swelling of
the glands, which release
chemicals like sweat,
tears, and hormones.
Adenopathy typically refers
to swollen lymph nodes
(lymphadenopathy)
Pathogenesis: The
development of a disease
and the chain of events
leading to that disease.
* Although I have not participated in a
clinical trial nor has my daughter, it might
be worth discussing it with your medical
team, and ask who is running the trial,
what are they testing, and whether they
think it might be helpful.
* The medical team can make the argument
that HL is a well-known cancer with established
treatment of 25 years and steer
you toward the " established treatment. "
However, new research is continuously
ongoing. Your doctor should be willing
to discuss these options with you.
3. NIH'S PUBMED WEBSITE
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov /
Another trusted medical research site in the
world is the National Institute of Health's
(NIH) National Library of Medicine-
PubMed. " PubMed CentralĀ® (PMC) is a free
full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences
journal literature.
I did a Search on HL on PubMed and
found several articles. I can narrow down the
articles by using the filters on the left-hand
side of the page-recent articles within the
last 3-5 years, article types, Meta-Analysis,
Review and Systematic Review-providing
me with the top review articles.
Again, you do not need to be overwhelmed
by this site and what information is available
there. It has helped us several times in
looking up information on side effects or
specific symptoms that steer us away from
one treatment or the other, in discussing
options with the doctors.
There are other websites/resources that I will
briefly mention: Cancer.org and top cancer
hospitals such as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute,
Mayo Clinic, and MD Anderson Cancer
