esistance exercises and weight training can be for everyone-and
a major key to bone health. You don't need
special equipment or weights. You just need a little guidance,
such as our Pure Cat classes, your doctor's approval,
and a good attitude to get started.
When you have someone like Coach Derek, Tigerlily Foundation's
Pure Cat fitness coach as your motivator, all you need is the internet
and some common household products to get started. Did you
know a can of beans can serve as a weight? Or that you can use a
milk jug filled with water or sand as fitness equipment? Our own
body weight can be all the resistance we need, and when combined
with specific positions and movements, we can get a full workout.
KEEPING FAITH ON THE CANCER JOURNEY
Remember as children how playing,
movement, physical activity, and exercise
just exploded from our bodies?
For some of us, there came a time when
fitness become a chore and it lost that
sense of fun and excitement. Thinking
about bone health and fitness became
just another item on our ever-growing
to-do list.
Many adults struggle with acute injuries,
health conditions, low self-esteem,
body image issues, and uncertainty on
how to exercise in an adult world. All
of this becomes compounded when
you are faced with a cancer diagnosis.
What happened to that innocent fun
when fitness was natural and carefree?
Having a trainer who works alongside
you, helping with your mental
well-being, physical health, rehabilitation,
and recovery, while providing
a constant stream of motivation can
not only change your life, but save your
life. This is especially true when living
through cancer-health, wellness, and
bone health can be a link in your treatment
plan that makes everything else
fall together.
Derek Burns is that person for Tigerlily
Foundation's Founder and CEO, Maimah
Karmo. Derek has been her personal
trainer for years, helping her through her
cancer journey and teaching her how to
apply faith with fitness. Derek is unique
in this role, as he is an ordained minister,
athlete, and military professional. Faith
has guided Derek in life, and he is paying
it forward by helping others get through
their own life challenges.
