Conversation A Q&A ON TNBC
Kelli was first diagnosed with breast
cancer in 2009 on New Year's Day at 26
years young. I immediately related to
her at that moment because my diagnosis
day was January 3rd. I can't quite
explain what having your world turned
upside down at the beginning of a new
year feels like. It feels like your fresh
start gets ripped out from underneath
you, and you are in turn dealt a hand
that you really don't want to play. Kelli
went on to share that she didn't have
any prior family history and no major
genetic markers that have been discovered-this
was her unlucky hand. Kelli
shared the information that her cancer
was hormone receptor positive at first; I
found this shocking that 12 years later,
her cancer morphed into TNBC, but she
assured me that it's a lot more common
than I thought.
Kelli was cancer free while on immunotherapy
drugs from her initial
diagnosis and treatment. She expressed
how thankful she is for this time in her
life because she was able to live like she
never had cancer. It wasn't until 2014,
when a persistent cough led to a chest
scan that revealed four bone lesions.
Since then, she has experienced metastasis
to her liver, and most recently,
a met on her optic nerve. Despite this
unfortunate development, she has never
stopped her heroic efforts when it comes
to advocating for others with metastatic
breast cancer.
Kelli is currently on a chemotherapy

hen I was offered the opportunity to speak to a metastatic triple-negative
breast cancer (MTNBC) thriver, I knew I couldn't turn it down. After
hanging up the phone, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes-I felt
I needed a minute or two before going back downstairs to the hustle
and bustle of being a mom of two. I had just spent 38 minutes speaking
with someone I had never met before, but now have a deep admiration for. We could
have talked for hours . . . you see, that's how it can feel when you connect with someone
who understands what you have been through and what you are still going through. As
a triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) survivor myself, I am honored to have had the
chance to chat with Kelli Davis, and I am even more honored to be able to share her story.

drug that she receives two weeks in a row.
She then gets one week off to allow her
body to rest before the next round begins.
Kelli has scans every three months
or so and has recently learned the incredible
news that her liver mets have
decreased by 50 percent. While this drug
has given her side effects such as extreme
exhaustion, she is celebrating the small
victories and continuing to get the rest
that she needs while listening to her body
so she can continue to heal. Kelli is also
still dealing with side effects from a yearlong
immunotherapy clinical trial that
left her with severe neuropathy complications.
She was in-patient for rehab for
a few months, and now does out-patient
physical therapy twice a week. Despite
