LIVE YOUR LIFE WITH CANCER - PRACTICAL /// CHAPTER 79
Financial Issues
Even with insurance, treatment and medications are expensive. Going to all of your
appointments can mean using more gas and/or parking costs. With the diagnosis and
treatment sometimes affecting your ability to work, finances can become a stressor. We
get it: the cost of living with cancer can be overwhelming, but there are lots of resources
available for you before, during and after treatment.
First things first: get connected with your
social worker and the person that works in
the finance department of your treatment
center! They are both a wealth of knowledge
and will be able to help identify what is
available for you. Sometimes there are
financial assistance programs offered
through your treatment center so it is best
to make sure you ask your navigation team
as soon as possible.
See chapter 77 for information about
Work and Disability and chapter 78 about
Insurance (or the lack thereof).
Medication:
Medications are expensive! But there are
lots of patient assistance programs (PAPs)
that offer free or low cost medications if
you're uninsured, underinsured or can't
afford your medications. The requirements
and benefits vary widely from program to
program, however your treatment team
members can assist you in the application
process for each program.
Listed below are some of the most wellknown
patient assistance programs
available in the United States:
» GoodRX for manufacturer co-pay cards
and free trials
» Patient Assistance Network (PAN)
» Patient Advocate Foundation (PAF)
» Lilly Cares Foundation Patient
Assistance Program
» The HealthWell Foundation
» Cancer Care of New York
» National cancer organizations
Transportation:
If you are dealing with issues with
transportation to your medical
appointments, there are patient
assistance programs (PAPs) that
offer assistance - a social worker
will be able to help you identify useful
ones in your area. Here are a few to
consider:

to Recovery Program https://www.

Other:
In addition to these common
needs there are local and national
financial resources for cancer
patients undergoing treatment like:
» academic scholarships
» grants for assorted financial
needs
» utility assistance
» rent or mortgage aid
» free wigs
» discounts for nutritional
supplements or healthy meals
» childcare
» housecleaning
» fertility preservation costs
No one expects you to know about
these resources - before cancer,
there was no reason for you to!
FWAYA knows that for your cancer
experience to be successful, your
financial stress has to be addressed
as well, so use our navigator and
social worker to help identify
assistance to meet your needs.
