Scanxiety
and Fear of
Recurrence
Scanxiety: It is normal and natural to have anxiety about
upcoming scans, but it is distressing. Scans are a time
when you come face-to-face again with the possibility of
cancer or the possibility of the progression of cancer. The
results of your scans greatly impact your future, and while
you wait for results-it is completely out of your control.
Anxiety is fear about the future, and as a cancer survivor, it
is normal to be afraid of cancer recurring in the future. But
while you anticipate and await results of scans, there may
be a few things you can do to help reduce your distress.
1. Stay in the Moment. One antidote for fear about the
future is observing the present. This can be really tough
when your mind is racing with possibilities of the future.
Mindfulness and relaxation strategies (widely available
for free online) can help quiet the mind and refocus
your attention to the moment. While you are in " limbo "
waiting for results, as far as you know, the cancer has not
recurred or progressed - so why not try to enjoy these
moments as much as possible? Life could be different
in the future, but you can't plan or do anything about that
right now. If you have a specific faith practice that also
helps with keeping you grounded in the present - this is a
good time to return to lean on those practices.
2. Distract. The time leading up to a scan and the time you
are waiting for results is a rather " short " period of time.
This is a great time to use distraction to get your mind off
worrying about the future. While you wait, do the things
you enjoy. Spend time with family/friends or engage in an
activity that brings you joy. While coping with distraction
all the time can create other problems, using distraction
to get through this " brief " period of time can be incredibly
helpful.
3. Get a Routine. You are likely already an expert with
getting poked and prodded and scanned. Scans will
probably be a part of your life for years to come. Scans
also represent important milestones in your cancer
journey, and it can be helpful to create a routine or
ritual that you follow as you prepare for and await scan
results. Maybe go out with family or friends to the same
restaurant each time, reflect on your cancer journey and
how far you have come, journal, write thank-you notes to
important people in your life who continue to provide you
with support during treatment or survivorship. Engaging
in the same routine each time can provide comfort and
familiarity during a time of uncertainty.
4. Remember the Facts. When anxiety takes over, our
thoughts tend to drift to focus ONLY on the worst-case
scenario. While the worst-case scenario is always
possible, it is NOT THE ONLY possibility. While you wait
for results, it is important to remember all the facts about
your risk for recurrence and to balance your fears with
reality. If you have had previous scans that have showed
stability or no evidence of disease, you may find it helpful
to reflect on those experiences to remember that a similar
outcome is possible.
