Other Things to Consider:
Preventing Infection:
» Public gyms can be very dirty. Talk to your team about
cleaner places to work out, or avoid going to gym
when your ANC is below 1000.
» Always wipe down machines before and after use.
» Clean your hands with hand sanitizer between each
machine and wash with soap and water after your
workout.
Now that we've talked about the
importance of physical activity and exercise
during treatment, you might be wondering:
OK, so what can I do to exercise safely?
Here are some suggestions:
» Talk with your doctor before you start any exercise
program. Their guidelines and advice may be different
than ours. Always get approval from your doctor before
you engage in any type of exercise.
» Find an exercise buddy (or group of friends): This is
someone you enjoy spending time with and who will
keep you accountable and motivated. Friends and family
will look for ways to help you out; why not give them
something fun to do with you!
» Figure out what activities you enjoy: You're more likely
to keep up with activities that are fun for you. There are
also so many free videos on the internet that can expose
you to different workouts you can do from your home
without equipment such as yoga, barre, and Pilates.

» Wait until you get home to take that well-deserved
shower. Locker rooms and bare feet are an infection
waiting to happen!
If you have Peripheral Neuropathy:
» Decreased sensation in your hands and feet can
increase your risk of falls or dropping things.
» Some safer options for exercise include stationary
bikes and swimming.
» Always exercise with a buddy in case you do have a
fall.
Avoid Breaking Bones:
» If you have cancer in your bones, it's important not to
do activities that might cause a bone to break. Talk
to your doctor about what activities and exercises are
safe for you.
