What do I need?
During treatment, you will need more protein.
What do I need to do?
High protein foods include: meat/fish/poultry, beans, nuts,
seeds, dairy products, eggs and tofu.
You may also need more calories than usual, depending
on the intensity of your treatment and your activity level.
Overall, you will need a healthy, well-balanced diet during
cancer treatment.
Vitamins and minerals are key to healing your body and
keeping your body's cells healthy. The best way to get
vitamins and minerals is through food. Vitamin, mineral,
and herbal supplements are typically discouraged because
they may interfere with your treatment. Only take a
supplement if it is prescribed or approved by your medical
team. Please discuss all nutrition supplements with your
medical team. (see chapter 46 for some guidance)
You may struggle with side effects (like mouth sores or
nausea) that impact your nutrition during treatment. Your
dietitian can give you tips on foods that may be better
tolerated until these symptoms improve.
Food safety is also essential because your treatment may
increase your risk for infection. This includes safe food
handling when buying, preparing, and storing foods.
» Clean surfaces before preparing foods. Always wash
your hands well with soap and hot water before meal
prep and after handling any raw meats/eggs. Wash fresh
fruits and vegetables well.
» Separate raw foods and the dishes/utensils used to
prepare them from all cooked foods.
» Cook all foods completely. Do not eat undercooked
meat or eggs. Reheat leftovers to 165°F.
» Chill cooked or perishable foods within 1-2 hours.
Throw away foods/beverages that have been at room
temperature for more than 2 hours. Store leftovers in
the refrigerator no longer than 3-4 days.
» When eating out, be aware of how clean the restaurant
is and how they prepare your food.

During treatment, let your team know if you have concerns
or if there are dietary changes you would like to make.
The team will also monitor your nutritional status during
treatment and help you and your family make nutrition
decisions. If something does not work, there's always other
things that can be tried!
After treatment, healthy food choices and physical activity
continue to be important because treatment may lead to
ongoing health issues such as changes in bone health and
risk for obesity.
» Eat healthy foods whenever possible to build healthy
habits during treatment.
» Do light exercise as often as possible to help preserve
muscle and create healthy habits.
» Encourage family members to support you by also living
a healthy lifestyle.

your nutrition and water (and exercise):
» MyFitnessPal: Largest database of foods, restaurants,
and brands to track calories, exercise, water, and set
goals.
» Fooducate: Track calories and exercise along with the
quality of the foods you are eating.
» Go Meals: Looks up calories, create recipes, track
exercise and water intake all in one app.
