Read aloud the introduction. Have children look at the photographs and explain
that both photos show a puffer fish. Have children read the caption and ask: Why
does the fish change in this way? (It is in danger.) Explain to children that sometimes
they need to combine clues in the photographs and text with what they already
know to make inferences.
Model how to make inferences about the fish:
*	 I read that the puffer fish gets big when it is in danger. I see that the puffer fish is
much bigger in the photo on the right and that it has spines that stick out.
*	 I know that little animals like the puffer fish are scared of bigger animals.
*	 And so, I can make an inference that the puffer fish protects itself by looking big and
spiny to scare away bigger animals.

Read aloud the instructions. Chorally read aloud the first two paragraphs and
then read aloud the sample inference. Have volunteers point out the sentence
that provides the information for the "I read" statement.
Have children read the rest of the text silently. Then have them reread with a
partner and pause to make inferences. Encourage children to ask their partners to
identify the sentences that helped them make their inferences.

If they cannot explain their process or the inferences do not make sense, use the photo on
page 15 of the Big Book to make an inference about where the goat lives. Ask: Does the
goat live in a hot or cold climate? (cold) How did you make that inference? (The goat has thick
fur. There is snow in the photo.)

ISSUE Children struggle to make inferences.
STRATEGY Indicate the last sentence of the text as
a starting point, and explain that children will make
an inference to answer the question Why does having
stripes help angelfish survive?
Ask: What does the text tell you about how
angelfish use their stripes? (They use them to hide in
long plants.)
Ask: What do long plants look like? (They have long
stems.)
Ask: Do you think the long plants look like the
angelfish's stripes? (Yes.)
Help children formulate an "And so..." statement
explaining that an angelfish's stripes blend in with
the tall plants and make them hard to see.
