Plan and Rehearse

Have groups use Speaking and Listening Routine 2 to choose an animal and
negotiate an informational presentation. Invite groups to brainstorm features that
help the animal they chose to survive. Children can use Academic Talk flip chart
page 12 to describe the animal features and record their ideas on note cards, which
they can reference during the presentation. Groups should also create visuals of the
animal and its features that they can show as they speak.

Creature Features!

Have children use Speaking and Listening Routine 3 as they deliver their
presentations. If possible, invite other classes to attend. During the presentations, ask
children to take notes about each animal that is described and what feature helps
it survive. Evaluate the presentations using the Oral Language Project Rubric.
For each panel discussion, assess one group's listening skills.
For Speaking and Listening Routine 3, see page BP21.

Debrief and Compare
Have groups share what they wrote down about the presentations. Children can add
the information to their unit mind maps.

Multi-Level Strategies
Have children name the animal and point out
each feature, using visual aids.
