Build Comprehension
To reinforce language comprehension and fluency, review the reading.
Play the recording or read the selection aloud. Pause when appropriate
to check understanding.
a) Page 108:
Use Text Features Point out the phonetic spelling of Brazil
and explain that such spellings are often placed in parentheses. Some
science articles use words that you may not know how to pronounce.
Some articles show how to pronounce the word, just like in a dictionary.
Have children sound the word out. Provide the proper pronunciation.
b) Page 110, paragraph 2:
Use Key Words Why do insects land on glowing mushrooms? (The light
of the mushrooms attract them.)
c) Page 112:
Analyze Language Choice Which word describes what the
glowworm does with the threads? (hangs)
Analyze Effect Why did the author use the word hangs instead of
puts? (The word hangs helps you picture what the threads look
like in the cave.)

After brainstorming why the author might have written "Living Lights,"
have English Learners work in a group to build their sentences. Have
groups choose several purposes from the brainstorming. Have each
child add a word to generate at least three sentences that explain the
author's purposes.
Encourage children to connect ideas. For example, change: The author
wants to tell about lights that help mushrooms. The author wants to tell
about lights that invite insects. to: The author wants to tell about lights that
help mushrooms and invite insects.

d) Page 114:
Use Key Words What special feature does a firefly have? (a light in its
tail that it uses to send messages )
e) Page 116:
Analyze Language Choice Which word describes what happens
when a fish swims to the light of an anglerfish? (SNAP!)
Analyze Effect What does this word help you picture in your mind?
(the anglerfish quickly closing its mouth around a small fish)
