With the military in power again,
Pakistan experienced moments of
prosperity. Yet it also continued to deny
people's rights. In 2007, the military
promised elections, and Benazir Bhutto
returned to Pakistan. However, she was
assassinated later that year. Bhutto's
husband, Asif Ali Zardari, was elected
president in 2008.

Elections were held again in 1988 after
the death of the military leader. Pakistanis
elected Bhutto's daughter, Benazir Bhutto,
as prime minister. Her opponents accused
her of corruption. She denied the charges,
but there were many threats on her life,
