Show Your Stuff: NHPCO’s Annual Contest Now Under Way! Each year, NHPCO sponsors a contest to showcase the artistic talents of hospice and palliative care staff, volunteers and supporters. For this year’s contest, which began on May 31 and will conclude on July 9, NHPCO is accepting photography, poetry and personal essays that reflect the hospice/palliative philosophy of care. 2 8 00 National Hospice Photography, Film, Essay & Poetry Aw ards What formats do you accept? Electronic copies of the photos (jpg or gif; 300 dpi or higher) are preferred; however, hard copies may also be submitted—but cannot be returned; thus, please do not send your original (or your only) print. Poetry and Essay Submissions Who can submit poems and essays? Staff, volunteers, and patients and their loved ones may submit their poetry and personal essays—but they must be submitted by the NHPCO member-organization. (The submission form asks for contact information about the artist/author, as well as the member-organization.) How many poems or essays can be submitted? Each author may submit up to two previously unpublished works (two poems or two essays, or one of each). Each poem should not exceed 100 lines, and each essay should not exceed 1,500 words. Prizes—and Recognition The fi rst-place winner in each category will receive a $50 gift card for use in the NHPCO Marketplace. Each secondplace winner will receive a $25 Marketplace gift card. The winning submissions will be featured in a multi-page PDF that will be promoted in NHPCO’s weekly e-newsletter, NewsBriefs, and featured on the website. However, here are answers to some commonly asked questions. © 2008 NHPCO and Palliative Care Organization Annual Contest Award Winners Photography Submissions Who can submit photographs? Photographs taken by an individual member, or by a professional or amateur photographer for an NHPCO member-organization may be submitted. What types of photographs are you accepting? Both black/white and color photographs which are no more than two years old are accepted. They should reflect the hospice/palliative philosophy of care, and should be submitted in one of three categories: Adult People (patients, staff, volunteers, families); Young People (pediatric patients, staff, volunteers, families); or Nature/Abstract. Note also that, as part of the submission process, a HIPPA-compliant release form must be completed and supplied with submissions depicting people (a sample form is provided in the NHPCO Contest Guidelines document).
