People & Places Betty Schmoll Inducted into Miami Valley’s Walk of Fame Betty Schmoll, the founding president of Hospice of Dayton (Dayton, OH), was one of just five honorees inducted into Miami Valley’s 2010 Walk of Fame—a collection of inscribed stones that punctuate the sidewalk in one of Dayton’s most historic neighborhoods, West Third Street in the Wright-Dunbar Historic District. Over 120 individuals have been recognized on the Walk of Fame for their outstanding and enduring personal or professional contributions to the southwestern Ohio region as well as the nation, including Neil Armstrong, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Wilbur and Orville Wright. Schmoll, who served as chair of the NHPCO board (1991-92) and received NHPCO’s prestigious Founders Award in 2004, was honored as “a visionary, humanitarian and medical professional,” and lauded for her work in establishing Hospice of Dayton in 1978. The program was also one of the first to construct an inpatient facility which was later expanded and served as a model in the field. “It took a lot of other people to make the dream come true,” Schmoll noted during the awards ceremony. “I am truly humbled…and honored to be included.” Newspaper Insert Educates 260,000+ Residents About End-of-Life Care Montgomery Hospice (based in Rockville, MD) produced a 12-page educational supplement that was included in a September edition of the local newspaper, The Gazette. The supplement was delivered to the 260,000-plus households in Montgomery County, Maryland, and features basic information about hospice care, grief, and advance care planning—along with articles about the program’s complementary therapies, inpatient facility, and more. The project was made possible with funding support from the program’s corporate partners. Kreitler Named Director of The Valor Institute for Palliative Medicine Patrice Kreitler, MN, RN, has joined Valor HospiceCare (based in Tucson, AZ) as director of The Valor Institute for Palliative Medicine, overseeing quality, regulatory, organizational development, research, and physician palliative care services.
