In 2008, Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care was at a crossroads: “Our strategy of relying on the ebb and flow of referrals from a few reliable sources was not sufficient for financial stability, let alone meaningful growth,” says Robin Stawasz, director of provider relations and family services. So STHPC adopted a new approach—one that provides specialized hospice care for individual disease processes. Its patient census has now nearly doubled while average length of stay has increased. Robin and her colleague, Suzanne Scheib, explain.
