Mode seating from humanscale addresses meeting and conferencing needs at hotel properties. 3. designed by acclaimed architect Matteo thun, the onto bath suite from duravit combines the warmth of wood with ceramic surfaces. 4. Carnegie debuted its first indoor/outdoor textile line, Voyage, which includes the exotic large-scale pattern Amulet wallcovering. Lasting success in hospitality often correlates with how an environment appeals to the senses. So furnishings, materials, and objects used in hospitality design should aim to be more than just durable. At this year’s Hospitality Design Expo + Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas, exhibitors addressed this through arresting pattern, saturated color, luxurious hand, and ultimate comfort, while some rethought the often overlooked facets of the hospitality market (see designers’ favorites from HD Expo in Designers Select on page 106). Standard ballroom chairs typically furnish meetings at hotels. Recognizing that these aren’t ideal for long sessions, Humanscale conceived Mode, an ergonomic chair with a flexible back, cushioning that follows the body’s contours, and a lightweight, stackable frame. Optional slipcovers dress up the piece substantially for social affairs. Loewenstein tackled adaptability with Tangent modular seating. The storage-integrated lounge units—for use in hospitality venues, as well as receptions or casual sitting areas in offices and retail stores— reconfigure in numerous ways. A highly useful configuration is combining the units to share backs, which not only decreases its physical footprint, but also encourages interaction. Optional features include integrated power and movable veneer table surfaces. Carnegie debuted its first indoor/outdoor textile line—the aptly named Voyage collection. Its nine styles draw on various cultural motifs such as classic gate scrollwork, Ikat patterns, and talisman forms. It would not be HD Expo without luxury bath fixtures that offer guests spa-like experiences. A truly elegant offering that surprises with its use of wood is the Onto bath suite, designed for Duravit by Italian architect Matteo Thun. Bonded, anti-warp plywood mingles with ceramic to create a clean furniture-like aesthetic for the bath. The line comprises wall-mounted sink consoles with gently curved counter edges for user comfort, and soaking tubs for relaxation. —sheiLA kiM june 2012 36
