A jury selected five winning projects and the public chose a people’s Choice Award recipient. “After eight years and more than 1,700 entries from 31 countries, the design is... Award continues to champion design excellence across market segments and around the world,” says John stephens, vice president of marketing for shaw Contract group. “the design is... Award program celebrates more than just beautiful spaces. these projects surmount simple beauty to deliver innovative solutions, impacting the people who encounter the space and the functions that take place within.” the jury was moderated by mark Harbick, design principal at nBBJ, and included four additional members: John nelson, founder and principal of design, neLson; Rachel gutter, director, Center for green schools at U.s. green Building Council; erica steenstra, interior design manager, the Walt disney Company; and Kathy Woo, director, Hopping Kovach grinnell. Winning firms will be recognized in an industry advertising campaign and will receive award sculptures. And a $2,000 donation will be awarded to a program or organization chosen by each firm. Departments are distinguished by use of color, graphics, furniture, and finishes, and provide flexible and collaborative environments for a broad range of employees. Beyond open work space, the program includes offices, dining facilities, and exhibition and public gathering space, as well as a recreation lounge with a video arcade, photo booth, bar, and game room. 2 2 Project sYnQA itoKi innovation Center Where tokyo Designer itoKi Corporation of tokyo The SYNQA ITOKI Innovation Center is home to design professionals providing interior design services for office, healthcare, and public facilities. Occupying three floors, the center features an open design to encourage a lively flow of ideas. The design of each floor reflects a different theme: the first floor represents the influx of ideas, the second floor expresses the interaction of external wisdom, and the third floor reflects the fruition of internal knowledge. Warm wood finishes are inviting, and the material palette includes glass and metal as well. 72 september 2013
