A Flowing Aluminum Ceiling Symbolizes Water in a Japanese Beauty Salon 80 photography: atsushi ishida interior detail a new haircut can change one’s outlook on life for the better, at least temporarily. Moriyuki ochiai architects performed the architectural equivalent of a makeover in designing a beauty salon within a standard-issue, 1,300-square-foot space on the second floor of an office building in Chiba, Japan, just east of tokyo. the arKhe beauty salon was named for a greek word related to the ancient belief that water is the source of all creation. the architects captured the movement and reflective qualities of water in the stand-out feature of the space: a sculptural ceiling made from curved, recycled sheets of aluminum that float above the main haircutting area. the form of the ceiling calls to mind both flowing water and cascading curls in hair. “Water is the source of all life,” says Moriyuki ochiai, founder of the eponymous firm, “and this space projects an image of clarity in pursuit of the origin of beauty.” not only is the ceiling beautiful, it is also reusable. the system was designed to be disassembled and reinstalled if the salon should need to relocate. like a good haircut, the salon’s interior is ephemeral. as light filtering through the wall of windows shifts throughout the day, so does the perception of the ceiling’s shiny surfaces and voluminous forms. —MURRYE BERNARD september 2013
