However, it’s undeniable that the big-box chain—which took a firm grip on 2009, dominating the retail scene and prospering in the tumultuous economic environment—has made strides that both impress and surprise. With fiscal year 2009 sales of $401 billion, the company employs more than 2.1 million associates worldwide and commands an impressive network of stores, totaling 7,900 retail units—supercenters, discount stores, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Club warehouses—under 62 different banners in 15 countries. While Wal-Mart has continued to expand its massive reach in 2009, the retailer also has made moves to better connect with communities, including introducing a new logo and brand image, revamping interior floorplans and exterior signage, and offering merchandise aligned with local tastes. Wal-Mart also recently unveiled its first Hispanic-focused supermarkets, named Supermercado de Walmart, which opened in Phoenix and Houston. Its Sam’s Club division also opened a 143,000-sq.-ft. Hispanic-focused store called Más Club in Houston. The retailing giant has also become a leading force in sustainability initiatives, debuting solar energy and wind power programs, alternatively fueled trucks, HighEfficiency pilot stores and, most recently, introducing a Sustainable Product Index designed to establish a single source of data for evaluating the sustainability of products. In addition to its green efforts, the company has won over consumers with its value message in 2009, bolstering its brand image and positioning the retailer for continued success.
