8 | From the Editor Recharge, refresh, reboot round this time each year, my brain tends to go into shutdown mode. Working at a frenetic pace nonstop since Jan. 1 tends to take its toll come the autumn months, and I find that October is a month where I deliberately make myself enjoy life’s moments of pause as much as its moments of activity. If I don’t make this intentional, I will forget to take in the fall air, watch a leaf fall from a tree—and surely will walk right past the next great idea that was ready to jump in my head while hurrying to the next deadline. We just had the pleasure of hosting our annual DDI Forum out in Sonoma Wine Country, and let me tell you—three days of gorgeous weather in a pristine setting among the top retail minds in the industry is just what this tired editor needed. (Note: I heard the wine was pretty fabulous as well, but being six months pregnant, I had to watch the tastings from the wings. Sigh.) We listened to fantastic speakers, partook in workshops and breakout sessions, toured a retail store, visited beautiful wineries, interacted with our peers and engaged our minds in the relationships and connectivity that make this industry what it is. A beautiful sunset or two and a nice glass of Pinot (so I’m told) helped seal the deal. It was a fantastic way to take in the abundance of creativity among us and recharge my static mindset. On page 36, we reveal the findings of our second-annual State of the Retail Design Industry Survey. Here, we learn how the industry as a whole has been recharged, reinventing how retail delivers to the consumer marketplace, and A refreshing our thought processes within our own companies and businesses. And, if you’re looking for a reboot on the mindful sustainability front, check out Justin Doak’s Greentailing column on page 18, where he lists some of the “sustainability classics” to get some fall reading in as the leaves start to change. Whether it’s attending an event, reconnecting with old friends and colleagues or simply picking up a new book with fresh ideas, find a way to recharge your mind, your thought process and your spirit this month. There are plenty of ideas out there, waiting to be thought up—2011 will be here before you know it.
