20 | Design Snapshot Sugar ’n spice Candy Rox satisfies the skate/surf sweet tooth By Caitlin Sheridan ucked into a commercial area of Rye, N.Y., Candy Rox is an avant-garde mix of sweet and spunk. Store owners Trish Frohman and Valerie Stone approached David Ashen, president of New York-based d-ash design, wanting to create a dynamic store that “merged the joy of being a ‘kid in a candy store’ with the rush of the surf/skater and music culture.” Aside from selling sweets, Candy Rox endeavors to create social change through support of community activities, schools, sports teams and nonprofit groups, in addition to allowing artists to custom design T-shirts and market them in the store. Led by Ashen as creative director, the d-ash design team strove to capture that brand embodiment in a general-store layout with a hip, street, music theme. With a largely transparent storefront, the front entrance is flanked by windows, each decked with the Candy Rox logo—an oversized, graffitiinspired bear. The 1,300-sq.-ft. space is broken into two areas where shoppers can find an assortment of seasonal products, candies and accessories. Upon entrance, customers are greeted by a T general-store-style counter adorned with oldfashioned glass candy jars filled with sweets. Juxtaposed against the nostalgia of an old-school general store, the walls of the store are plastered with brightly colored graffiti and old vinyl records. Chain-link fencing suspends from the ceiling, creating a grid for the custom-designed black barrels that hang down as lighting fixtures, enhancing the skater rock vibe. Moving further into the store, the design screams skate-park. The sides of a recycled plywood half-pipe gently slope up the wall toward unique shelving made of old skateboard decks, laden with T-shirts and accessories. Reclaimed wood walls, varying in different shades of color, give the adjacent perimeter walls a fun, authentic, striped look. In the very rear, another wall is covered in corrugated metal, serving as a “community wall” where locals can post flyers for events. Candy Rox has created a comfortable, culturedriven space where tweens, teens and young adults alike can gather to satisfy their sweet tooth—as well as their playful taste. www.ddionline.com | July 2011 Photos: Daniel Aubry http://www.ddionline.com
