10 | From the Show Director GlobalShop2013 Sponsored by: Spinning the wheels April 16-18, 2013 McCormick Place, Chicago www.globalshop.org GlobalShop 2013 I rode my bike into work this morning for the first time in several years. A few summers back, I was doing it on a fairly regular basis, but winter came, the weather changed and the excuses mounted. It’s certainly not the most convenient way to get to work, but it’s definitely rewarding. Once I get past the minor annoyances of carrying everything on my back for 10 miles each way (and showering in what closely resembles a closet), I realize it’s a great way to start and end each day. I come into the office supercharged, and I arrive home refreshed. The stresses of the day fade away with the stress of the first big hill. There’s been something of a cycling renaissance on the GlobalShop team of late. Senior Account Executive Roarke Dowd recently took the plunge and bought himself a very nice Trek road bike and has been putting quite a few miles on it. David Muirhead, also a senior account executive, benefitted by getting a good deal on Roarke’s old bike and has been giving it a good workout. Our Marketing Manager Brent Harrison joined the fun and christened his new bike on a Metric Century ride (62 miles) in July. We’ve even become a bit competitive to see who’s logging the most time in the saddle. So, what does any of this have to do with retail design and in-store marketing? It turns out, quite a bit. Nielsen Expositions, the parent company for both GlobalShop and DDI, also produces Interbike, the premier cycling trade event in North America. Interbike is a show for bicycle dealers and features the latest innovations in bicycles and accessories. And while retail design is not the main focus of Interbike, its audience is interested in design, because they understand that’s where the customer experience starts. Further, bicycles are fairly specialized purchases; you can buy them online, but most people choose not to. A good bike can be a major investment, and people want to see it and ride it, as well as gain a comfort level with the shop that sells it to them. Toward that end, DDI and GlobalShop will be producing a panel discussion at Interbike 2012 this September called “Why Store Design Matters,” addressing the importance of retail design to the bicycle business. Many dealers and manufacturers already attend GlobalShop, but this is an opportunity to spread the word about retail design in a show very specific to their market. The session will be moderated by DDI Executive Editor Alison Embrey Medina and will feature a panel of designers.
