50 AWARDS 2012 Best-Designed Stores of the Year 1 Photos: Atsushi Nakamichi, Nacasa & Partners Inc. st G Place UNIQLO Fifth Avenue, New York lobal apparel retailer UNIQLO, a subsidiary brand of Japan-based Fast Retailing Co., debuted its largest flagship in the world on New York’s Fifth Avenue last October. Totaling a massive 89,000 sq. ft. over three floors, the store boasts 100 dressing rooms and 50 cash registers. This distinctive apparel emporium was selected by DDI readers as the Best-Designed Store of the Year. Designed by Tokyo-based Wonderwall, the concept will serve as a model for future UNIQLO stores globally, intended to realize the best customer experience possible—from store design to product layout to visual technology and customer service. The first floor of the space is entirely devoted to cashmere, while the second floor is home to the +J collection and the third floor plays host to a combination of everything from womenswear to menswear. The mammoth space welcomes visitors with a striking escalator that seems to extend into infinity, taking shoppers all the way to the third floor. Colorful merchandise pops against the neutral backdrop of the space, while mirrored and reflective surfaces create the illusion of never-ending rows of clothing.
