1. Glow
There is a subliminal use of glow that's prevalent in the
design world right now, and it draws us right in. It harnesses
that technological brightness that we wake up to, go to bed
with, socialize with, do business with, get directions from,
take pictures with...you get the point. I am seeing it come up
in everything from products for underlighting and
backlighting to walls, catwalks, light fixtures, public spaces
and even make-up hues. Glowing natural stone is especially
lovely. Porcelanosa Tile Showroom: Photo by MARY KLIE

2. Dark
Yes, black is everywhere, but rich colors like navy, deep reds,
plums and heavy greens are just as powerful and even more
mysterious. Maybe the future isn't bright white, maybe it's
guarded, as Dutch designer Martijn Van Strien predicts. In
contrast to the "Glow" trend, we could be seeing some sharp
lighting very soon as it plays off of these dark, mysterious
colors. Bloomingdale's, James Perse Shop-in-Shop, Los Angeles:

This trend goes deep. The nature of water patterns is not only
influencing design from a visual standpoint, but also with
the angle of water conservation. One major player right now
is InterfaceFlor, which does both with their collection "The
Net Effect." These patterns capture the natural effects of
water beautifully and are made from discarded fishing nets
from the Philippines through programs called ReEntry and
Net-works. InterfaceFlor's Net Effect in B602, Pacific:

4. Hand-Drawn
While chalk has made its mark for a while now, this trend is
well beyond chalkboards. Instead, I'm talking about the
influence of tattoo art, fine art, pen and ink, and graphite.
Designers see the need for drawing-often, the messier, the
better-as an antidote to slick and eclectic environments
alike. Look for the hand-drawn trend to make appearances in
wallcoverings, textiles, graphics, clothing, rugs and resilient
products. TraGaLuz Restaurant, Barcelona: Photo by MARY KLIE
5. Caves
It might be the 3-D printing revolution that's inspiring this
trend of dimensional dwellings, or maybe it's another way of
broadening the notion of privacy-by creating a cocoon of a
space just for you. Whatever the reason for the rise of these
sculptural spaces, they are going to expand our sense of place
and comfort. Zash Country Boutique Hotel, Italy: Photo courtesy of
