are you eco intelligent? news Russian Makeover After re-designing the standard rooms and suites of Orient Express’ Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg, Russia, French designer Michel Jouannet was brought in once again, this time, for the hotel’s 10 historic suites (the hotel was built in the 1820s and is under preservation as a historical monument). “The owner selected 10 themes in relation to St. Petersburg, the hotel history, and its life,” explains Jouannet, who also designed the brand’s Hotel Cipriani in Venice. “I concentrated on the conception of an atmosphere for each suite with its own theme.” There’s the Pavarotti suite, which celebrates the Italian tenor who stayed at the hotel during his final tour in 2004, outfitted with a palette of off-white with gold and red accents, and a bathroom swathed in black and pink marble. The writer Dostoevsky is honored in another where soft yellow and white hues mingle with wallpaper featuring a 19th century-style pattern. The local Mariinsky Theater is commemorated in its namesake suite that boasts light blue tones that match those found inside the theater. Throughout, fabrics are elegant with subtle patterns, most of the furniture pieces are antiques originally from the hotel, and each suite is filled with paintings, pictures, and photos referring to its theme. “These suites give guests a strong feeling of the city’s history and its rich culture,” Jouannet says. michel-jouannet.com; www.grandhoteleurope.com Second Act For their second restaurant in Dallas, the Second Floor Bistro, husband-and-wife duo chef Scott and Gina Gottlich wanted a space that “had a sleek feel to it.” Highlights of the 2,500-square-foot space, housed in the Westin at shopping haven Galleria, include a long terrazzo bar, an ethanol fireplace, a color palette of cream and neutral colors, and glass walls in the bar area, while the dining room boasts a softer feel thanks to warmer tones, a wood slatted accent wall, and carpeting. “There are no white or black tones anywhere in the restaurant,” explains Gina, adding local designer Susie Brennan and San Francisco-based Steinberg Architects collaborated on the project. “All of the millwork is a dark brown, which gives the sleek black look but has a warmer vibe.” Eco are manufactured by Victor, a leader in eco-engineering for over ten years.
