By Jana Schiowitz Photography courtesy of W Retreat Koh Samui While most Koh Samui resorts focus on relaxation and leave the nightlife to the locals, W wanted to create something different: a selfcontained retreat for the Thai island. “We were trying to achieve two different themes based on day and night—daytime is relaxed beach Zen with a Thai twist, while nighttime is inspired by the full moon parties, lanterns, and fireworks symbolic of Koh Samui,” says Carl Almeida, project director for Bangkok firm P49 Deesign, who created the beachfront W Retreat Koh Samui. “We designed the property as an island within an island. [Guests] do not need to leave as everything is within this island retreat.” From top: The lit exterior of the Tropical Oasis Retreat at the W Retreat Koh Samui resembles a home; the Retreat Villa’s living room.
