Durability, utility, beauty—the three classic principles of architecture as observed by Vitruvius in the 1st century— continue to deﬁne the form. But Vitruvius could scarcely have anticipated the sheer diversity, scope, and grandeur of many of the contemporary buildings rising all over the world. Many architects probably echo the sentiments of Wid Chapman, of New York-based Wid Chapman Architects, who feels it’s hard to keep up with the onrush of projects viewed ﬂeetingly as he peruses magazines, websites, and other media. “It’s almost subliminal,” he says. “There are so many buildings you’d like to see and examine. But [my impression] is of a very eclectic zeitgeist rather than a single profound project.” Among the myriad recent constructs that can be considered inspirational, here is a quartet made up of those non-hospitality projects frequently cited by readers, experts, and our own editorial sensibility. Seoul Light DMC Tower In Seoul, South Korea, this mixed-use building by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) will be 133 stories of up-to-theSalvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Florida Designed by Yann Weymouth of Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, the museum opened in early January to house the treasures of the 20th century surrealist. In a design evoking Dali’s vivid imagination, the museum stands 75 feet tall and is covered by 1,062 glass panels. But beauty had to be combined with practicality to allow the building to withstand Florida’s occasional severe weather. Says Weymouth, “It is important that the building speak to the surreal without being trite.” The High Line, New York Local ﬁrm Diller Scoﬁdio + Renfro took an abandoned railroad line in the city’s West Village and transformed it into an aerial minute green technology and awareness. Solar panels, living walls, and wind turbines are expected to reduce energy consumption by 66 percent. LED lights in the façade will illuminate as sunlight fades. A vertical void or “solar engine” in the building’s core will trap air to be heated by the sun. It’s a 21st century ediﬁce that will combine beauty and brains.
