out of this world?
Christian Lacroix, the French couturier whose creations have been worn by Lady Diana, Helen Mirren, and Christina Aguilera, was propelled to fame in the 1980s with his fantastical puffy skirts, making him one of the most inventive designers of the last few decades. The Lacroix company was once part of the French luxury giant LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, and since parting ways with its last owner, the Falic Fashion Group, the designer turned his focus away from the world of fashion to design everything from hotels to highspeed trains. At this year’s Salone del Mobile, the designer launched an imaginative furniture and lamp collection in collaboration with Italian mosaic company SICIS. We sat down with the designer, who shed light about his latest collaboration, the general perception of him as “out of this world,” and his desire to please. HD: So how did your collaboration with SICIS start? CL: It came about a year ago through my connection with the mother of Alix de Chabot, my communications person, who wanted me to meet with Leo Placuzzi, the owner of SICIS. He wanted me to do some jewelry using micro-mosaics. I thought, why not? So I went to Ravenna, and discovered this very special world—it was like a mosaic planet. Growing up in Arles, a small town in the south of France, I was fascinated by the old mosaics that were found in the excavations in the town, which was originally Greek and then Roman. And I loved these ‘pixel’-like mosaics. As a child, I was silent and wellmannered, but bored to death. It was not fashion that fascinated me; I used to redo and recreate everything in my head, whether it be a house, the landscape, cars, trains. Even before the couture house stopped, I became more and more involved in doing hotels and hospitality and decorating. On one hand, the end of the couture house was something sad, but as soon as I had been assured that all the seamstresses and people I used to work with all had new jobs, I felt free to be myself. Frankly, by the end, I had no more chemistry with the managers from the U.S., and we were not sharing the same targets. It was very uncomfortable for me. I was no longer myself. I was pretending to be Christian Lacroix and was acting like a designer. When I was relieved of my duties, I was ready to design something with Mr. Placuzzi, but the timetable was too short to design jewelry. HD: Do you think it’s easier to design furniture than jewelry? CL: This kind of jewelry was so precise and special that I needed more time. When the couture house stopped, I signed many agreements to work on designs such as costumes for operas, mainly in Germany (I would love to do set design!); a tramway for the city of Montpelier; and I was working on the Hôtel Le Notre Dame, just steps away from the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, which is now open. Anyway, Mr. Placuzzi proposed that I design a line of furniture and wanted something that reflected a new way of living with chairs—where chairs could become beds or be used for conversation rooms. I did the sketches in just three months, proposing three different directions. The initial one was more abstract, but I much preferred the baroque approach. I tried to have designs
