I ﬁrst met David Rockwell on the phone nearly a dozen years ago. I was new to the magazine, and for the life of me I can’t remember the topic we discussed, although I do remember some time being given to his wonderful staircase for the late, lamented Ruby Foo’s restaurant on the Upper West Side. Over the years, our professional lives crisscrossed frequently. Naturally, the quality of his work ensured that we would publish a great many of his projects over the years, and members of his team were frequent attendees at our two tradeshows. David himself was there often, for product launches, a book signing, panel appearances, a keynote conversation with me at HD Boutique, and once to accept a Manfred Steinfeld Award for his humanitarian efforts on behalf of DIFFA. Rockwell Group has been the recipient of multiple HD Awards for its projects, and Rockwell’s staff have often served as cheerful and expert judges for some of our product competitions.

On a personal level, David and I soon discovered our mutual passion for the performing arts, and I was delighted when his portfolio began to include some of the most impressive theater sets—Hairspray and The Normal Heart among them—I have ever seen. Whenever we run into each other, we invariably spend a certain amount of time playing the “Have you seen . . .?” game favored by so many theatrical junkies. In short, 12 years has seen a lot of collaboration and cooperation, so I was more than thrilled that he agreed to be our third guest editor for this issue. Little did I know (although should have anticipated) that he would throw himself into the task with such thoroughness and gusto. As you’ll see as you peruse these pages, he offered the theme of transformation, created a number of ideas and concepts to enhance it, and plunged into his amazing rolodex to tap the expertise of those artists who are this issue’s contributors. (David discusses his choices on page 26.) He even chose the projects we feature this month from those recently submitted. It’s been an exhilarating experience to work with David and his congenial staff, and the result is an issue of Hospitality Design unlike any other. David has transformed our minds, and we’re certain you’ll feel the same.
