Private dining rooms get the luxe treatment
When he’s not at Scarpetta, located on the fringes of New York’s Meatpacking District, or at his other restaurants in Las Vegas, Beverly Hills, Miami, and Toronto, chances are you will find Scott Conant at the SCM Culinary Suite, a new 3,500-square-foot Soho loft designed by New York-based Brian Leister that’s equal parts production studio, test kitchen, and corporate headquarters. But in the evenings, when there are no photo shoots and pasta tastings, the space—comprised of a lounge area that doubles as a bar, dining room, library, and full kitchen designed by Kindra Predmore-Thompson—morphs into a prime event venue, whether for an intimate dinner party or convivial cocktail hour. “The shell of the Culinary Suite is typical of Soho loft spaces: high ceilings, natural light, and bright, airy space with rusticity and texture,” says Conant. “I love the long table. It is regal, weathered, and truly the center of the room. There’s something grand and simultaneously approachable about it.” Renting out the loft of one of the country’s most well known chefs isn’t always a likely scenario, but luckily a number of restaurants have stepped up their private dining facilities, offering rooms that are as big on style as intimacy.

large, double-hung windows with steel casings and textured glass all structured within beautifully worn brick. This unexpected feature makes up the entire backdrop of the room. In fact, we changed the floorplan to accommodate the visibility of this wall. Also on this same wall there is a sizable alcove where we created a weathered wood shutter assembly used for candle display.” Another highlight of the room, visible from most parts of the restaurant, is a sculptural installation contemporizing a traditional Peruvian loom. “Made simply of walnut planks and yarn, we created a pattern that is subtle but intricate and has a direct correlation to the materiality that exists within the furniture and custom lighting throughout the entire restaurant,” Levitt adds.

Raymi
Raymi, also in New York, is the newest restaurant in chef Richard Sandoval’s empire. While the majority of seating at this Peruvian eatery is a stone’s throw from the bustling Pisco and ceviche bars, in back there is a private dining room, where there are handmade geodesic domeshaped ceramic pots with ferns hanging from dark wood frames and chairs upholstered in Peruvian striped herringbone fabric. “We wanted the private dining room to feel slightly more urban and weathered relative to the restaurant,” says Jeremy Levitt, principal of local firm Parts and Labor Design, who handled the design with partner Andrew Cohen. “We intended to expose all of the brick walls behind the previously existing sheetrock, and were fortunate to find a hidden jewel in the form of three

Artwork also features prominently in the private tatami room of Pabu, a modern take on the authentic Japanese izakaya from Michael Mina, adjacent to the Four Seasons Baltimore. Wendy Tsuji of Frost-Tsuji Architects in San Francisco, who also worked on Mina’s Wit & Wisdom tavern at the property, commissioned artist Maile Yawata to design the room’s stunning fusuma screens that slide open or closed as needed depending on the gathering. “Sometimes people want to truly have their own table and the doors are closed; if the fusuma doors are open you capture the energy of the dining room. The importance is the flexibility,” Tsuji says.
