Dreams. Dan Kwan, senior vice president and managing director of Blueplate, gave the space an interactive feel by opening up the kitchen and creating ve zones to tie together China’s myriad cuisines. In keeping with the Chinese preference for private dining rooms, he created a number of semi-private and private rooms nished in jade green and indigo across two levels. “The development of the private dining rooms has proven to be an outrageous and out-of-the-box experiment,” exclaims Kwan. “Instead of a typical room, we decided to turn every private dining room’s façade and interior into a pebble-like shaped room. The irregularities of the curves in each room give patrons a brand new experience every time they visit the restaurant.” One room that seats 40 can be opened to become part of the general dining space, giving Jade Dragon additional exibility. Kwan appreciates the opportunities that Macau o ers to designers willing to push the line between interior design and theatrical experiences. “Macau gets a constant ow of surprise visitors from the president of the United States to the prime minister of England to world class artists and performers. We design with di erent types of people in mind: gamers and high rollers along with sophisticated and curious tourists. [For instance], we pushed the boundary of material manipulation and worked on the very di cult process of bending wood veneer in compound curves—something which we did not think was possible but managed to achieve with the highest workmanship.” Ullmann agrees that the unlimited boundaries and limited resources are what make working in Macau today both challenging and exciting: “Macau’s interiors will soon be less about a particular theme and more about stimulating through innovative design and technology.” hd

colors. In honor of the women of that time, the China Rouge interior design contains many feminine elements that make the whole concept more a ractive.”

Hotel Okura > Guestrooms and lobbies in the Tokyo-based hotel brand’s rst property in greater China was designed by Hong Kong’s Chhada Siembieda & Associates, while Japanese rm Kanko Kikaku Sekkeisha worked on the F&B outlets, health club, and terrace. The la er created a traditional tea ceremony room in the shape of a minimal white sphere clad with washi paper for guests to appreciate the centuries-old practice by tea master Yayoi Shirai. It is situated within the Japanese bamboo interior garden of Yamazato, the hotel’s signature restaurant with contemporary minimalist design expressed through wooden furnishings and clay walls. Guestrooms include soothingly pa erned neutral fabrics and hardwood plank ooring emphasizing calm. The 2,000-square-foot Imperial suite features a large Japanese Zen garden terrace adjacent to its living area, kimono inspired fabrics, and cherry blossom motifs on the wardrobe doors. Banyan Tree Macau > Chhada
Siembieda & Associates, along with Architrave Design and Planning (the design arm of Banyan Tree) and dwp SRG Ltd (who handled

Belon restaurant), gave Banyan Tree Macau a restful tranquility that is not only the brand’s trademark aesthetic, but also a much soughta er sanctuary within the bustle of Macau. The 21-treatment room spa is generously proportioned with large re ecting pools transitioning guests between the entrance and the two wings of treatment rooms. Meanwhile, 10 villas and the presidential suite include their own gardens and swimming pools, while all of its 246 suites include relaxation pools Says Abid Bu , Banyan Tree’s CEO: “Macau is a fascinating destination that boasts a rich historical legacy in addition to its contemporary allure as an epicenter of casino culture. [We created] an elegant se ing from which to explore a diversity of experiences for guests of all ages. It is not merely a place for those interested in gambling.”

two new restaurants this year, while work recently began on its latest resort, Studio City, slated for completion on south Cotai in 2015. The Tasting Room is a clever combination of ne French dining, wine bar, and chocolate corner with a VIP room for tastings and events. Brulhart was originally tasked with creating a restaurant that delivers a wow factor, yet he had to work with the existing main dining room’s design. “We opened up the space and added a chocolate bar to make the restaurant more inviting and less formal,” says Brulhart. “We changed key things for people to feel like something exciting is happening. It was like an intervention. For example, we were careful to make sure that new carpet pa erns worked with the existing.” Meanwhile, designed by Blueplate Studios, the F&B arm of Wilson Associates, Jade Dragon o ers ne Cantonese dining in a previously unoccupied corner of City of
