Cartagena > Cartagena has always been a safe, charming city,

but through guilt by association, plotting a trip to this Caribbean coast city,
say 10 years ago, would have raised eyebrows—and instilled fear. Now that
Colombia has shed its ’80s-induced dangerous reputation, open-minded
international travelers are realizing a beautiful Colonial city awaits. Late
last year, JetBlue boldly debuted the first non-stop flight service between
New York and Cartagena, underscoring the popularity and proximity
(venturing to Buenos Aires, say, takes double the time) of this destination
among such an important tourism demographic. Hotel brands are
responding to this surge in interest with properties melding local culture
and high design.
“The country is experiencing overall economic growth, and significant
effort is being placed on generating tourism. With dedicated marketing
campaigns to support the industry and drive travel, the country is now
benefiting from today’s positive perception of Colombia,” says Leo
Eskenazi, Hilton Worldwide’s director of design for Latin America and
the Caribbean.
Eskenazi has spent much time in the city. Last fall, the beachfront
Hilton Cartagena unveiled its renovation. Thanks to local designers
Juan Manual Garcia and German Lopez Barrera, the 341-room property
celebrates Cartagena’s environs, with guestrooms flaunting blue and violet
hues, natural oak furnishings, and earthy porcelain floors. “The floor-toceiling windows generate expanded views and provide an abundance of
natural light,” adds Eskenazi.
This developing area is racking up the skyscrapers: In 2014, the
neighborhood will also be home to the 278-room Cartagena Marriott Hotel.

capstone suites were recently revamped to reflect Colombian culture.
The Presidential suite is now called the Fernando Botero, designed by the
namesake prolific painter, along with his Mexico City-based daughter,
Lina. Here, a palette of wheat and sand nods to Botero’s earliest works;
natural materials like linen, jute, and cotton speak to Colombia’s craft
heritage; and Carrera marble bathrooms offer a modern contrast to
loom-woven curtains. Likewise, a junior suite has been reimagined by
MarcelaVillegas. The all-white scheme pops with gray, turquoise, mint,
and pink to complement the screen-print works of colorful festivals by Ana
Mercedes Hoyos on display.
Cartagena is known for a multitude of magical boutique properties,
many of them set in rambling Colonial mansions, like the chic, sevenroom Tcherassi Hotel by fashion designer Silvia Tcherassi, which opened
in 2010. Newcomer Casa San Agustin, with its inner courtyards, ancient
aqueduct, beamed ceilings, and restored frescoes, is poised to be just as big
a hit with the fashionable masses.
Kelley McRorie of Hilton Head, South Carolina-based KS McRorie
Interior Design tackled the project. “While we wanted the design to have
every modern convenience and feel very luxe, it was extremely important
that we remained true to the Colonial heritage and history of the city.
It is well known for its grand homes, and people do a lot of entertaining
in their houses there, so we wanted the property to feel more like a well
curated private residence,” she says. In the guestrooms, floors are crafted
from locally sourced Coralina stone and layered with rattan and sisal rugs.
Vibrant, handpainted tiles adorn the baths, and throughout the property,
scenes of Cartagena life are captured by Colombian photographer Facundo
Zuviria. “We worked very closely with local architect Vladimir Caballero to
maintain the integrity of the historical nature of the buildings, which date
back to the seventeenth century,” McRorie points out.
