Philippines > Ever since Benigno S.

Aquino III, scion of former Philippines president
Corazon C. Aquino and Benigno S. Aquino Jr.—
who fronted the opposition to the country’s Marcos
regime in the 1960s through the 1980s—followed
in his mother’s footsteps and became leader of his
homeland in 2010, much attention has been paid
to the high growth rate of the Philippines’ economy. Inevitably, impressive
economic policies breed robust tourism, and the Philippines is enjoying a
surge in travelers to both its many pristine islands a la the Maldives, and
bustling Manila.
According to the Office of Tourism Planning, Research, and
Information Management at the Philippine Department of Tourism,
the U.S. is the country’s second leading tourism market by volume—
sandwiched between Korea and Japan—with a 4.5 percent growth rate.
The soaring figures are more impressive from other parts of the globe: a
nearly 22 percent jump in South America, and 40 in Eastern Europe.
For 10 years, members of modern outdoor furniture brand Dedon’s
management board flocked to Siargao—the island just a 45-minute
flight from the company’s Cebu factory—for weekend getaways. Dedon
owner Bobby Dekeyser loved the area so much, he bought property from
a friend and transformed it into Dedon Island resort, a remote hideaway
surrounded by beaches and mangrove forests imagined by designers JeanMarie Massaud and Daniel Pouzet that opened last fall.
“The idea was to push a village feeling as far as possible,” says Pouzet.
“Especially in this kind of location, a successful project means including
materials from the surrounding area.” This translates to plenty of
indigenous woods, thatched nipa roofs, and designs from local carvers.
Pouzet thinks Dedon Island will emerge as a new Asian hotspot not
only for the intrigue of its posh, carefree villas, but because of its proximity
to Hong Kong and China, and “the wilderness and Robinson Crusoe
feeling through the thousands of island fishing spots.” He adds, “Much
more than in the crowded cities, the authenticity of the countryside is a
great opportunity to discover Asian culture.”

Yet it’s in one of those crowded cities, the capital, Manila, where designforward hotels are sprouting up to attract tourists and business travelers
alike. In 2014, the 10-story Hilton Manila—the city’s first Hilton property—
will make its debut in Newport City, adjacent to Terminal 3 of the Ninoy
Aquino International Airport. A year later, a mixed-use tower in Metro
Manila’s Fort Bonifacio Global City will be home to the Grand Hyatt
Manila and Residences. This collaboration between Hong Kong-based
Wong + Ouyang and Bilkey Llinas Design marks Hyatt’s second foray into
the city, following the Hyatt Hotel & Casino Manila.
In financial and commercial mecca Makati, one of the 17 cities
comprising Metro Manila, six hotels are under construction, bringing
1,899 new rooms, the Philippine Department of Tourism reports. One of
the most buzzed arrivals is the just-opened, 32-suite Raffles Makati located
on the ninth and 10th floors of a new 30-floor tower, which also houses
237 Raffles residences. Singapore-based Bent Severin & Associates has
outfitted suites with floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden floors dressed with
hand-tufted silk velvet rugs, and local touches like ceramic pots.
Another part of this development is the Fairmont Makati, also courtesy
of Brent Severin & Associates. Tom Meyer, the hotel’s managing director,
says emphasizing the country’s rich history and culture was a priority
throughout the property. “In the lobby, you will find interesting artifacts
like enlarged jars patterned after coconut oil containers found in local
villages, or sculptures depicting colorful native birds. A chandelier of
handblown crystals delineating flying fish welcomes guests to the hotel,”
he says. “Though modern in look and feel, the accessories and furniture
in guestrooms have interesting details, such as mother of pearl and capiz
shells. It’s a treasure trove of brilliant art and décor.”
