to spawn nearly 80 hotels in Europe under the lifestyle portfolio AC Hotels
by Marriott. And now the "upper-moderate, design-led brand," according
to AC Hotels by Marriott's vice president Callette Nielsen, is exploring
development opportunities in the U.S.' top 20 travel markets, including
Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, and New York.
"Sleek, sophisticated European-inspired aesthetics bring the culture of the
location alive to support our guests' experience," explains Nielsen. With its
simple, clean, and crisp aesthetic, AC Hotels by Marriott is "urban in feel
but not always location, maintaining a European sensibility. The hotels are
not cookie-cutter, not overly colorful, and not prototypical."
Miami is the site of the first edgy b2 property from B Hotels & Resorts.
Ayelet Weinstein, president and CEO of the company, says that b2 fills
a void for travelers in search of stylish accommodations at a compelling
price point: the value-full-service model. "The B brand DNA stands for
Destination, N'vogue, and Approachability, and these core elements are
being integrated into the design of each one of the hotels," Weinstein adds.
"At b2 Miami Downtown, clean lines, simple details, modern furniture, and
cool colors were used to allow guests to feel that they are still in downtown
Miami once they enter the building." Throughout b2 properties-the top 20
travel markets in the U.S. are currently being explored-look for distinctive
furnishings, music, and inspiring art.
Joining Commune Hotels + Resorts' Thompson and Joie de Vivre
brands is Tommie, a portfolio of hotels that CEO Niki Leondakis deems
"innovative, social destinations that are efficient, affordable, and beautiful.
The concept is centered on efficient ergonomic guestrooms and dynamic,
highly activated public spaces in unique urban environments. The

overarching design ethos is purposeful efficiency and not being wasteful."
The first two properties, launching in New York in 2015, are aimed at
those "willing to try things on the fringe-they are more adventurous,"
Leondakis points out. Audra Tuskes, Commune's vice president of design,
says they began thinking about Tommie's aesthetic positioning with a
collegiate attitude, "meaning some of our references were inspired by
the functionality and layout of dormitory rooms. If you dig into design
history, there are great modern examples in the thinking of Le Corbusier,
Charlotte Perriand, Marcel Breuer, Jean Prouve, and Gio Ponti. Their
dorm furniture constituted modular, complete environments; they were
kits of parts. In the example of Ponti, the paneling wraps the room and the
furniture is an extension of it. Since we're dealing with small spaces, the
design is much more attentive to the way furniture works."
With design partners AvroKO, Tuskes says they were looking to
"capture the spirit of experimentation and rebellion that underlies the
academic setting." To imbue the spaces with genuine residential warmth,
they incorporated materials like wood, stone, tile, wool, and flannel. "One
of the mantras of Tommie is 'help yourself,' as opposed to 'serve yourself.'
Despite the limited service positioning, the quality of service and product
shouldn't be compromised," explains Tuskes. "Though we've stripped
the room of traditional elements like the minibar and room service, our
intention is to drive that energy to common areas and food and beverage
spaces. The stuff we're scraping away isn't meaningful to the demographic
we're targeting. We're going to offer great bath products, artisanal-quality
food options, and various 'creature-comforts.' They'll be available in the
public areas to allow guests to curate their own experiences. Having
the ability to appropriate one's environment with attractive options at a
reasonable price point-that's the essence of affordable luxury."

"I am looking to places in China with a rich
cultural heritage and history where art and
culture coincide, such as Xi'an and also
Qufu-the birthplace of Confucius-where we
recently completed the Shangri-La, the city's
first 5-Star hotel. These forgotten treasures
have now become the most sought-after
destinations."
