STUDENT COMPETITION 2012 PRESENTED BY ISS AWARDS The 2012 Impressions Awards Student Decorating Competition honors tomorrow’s decorated apparel industry entrepreneurs. T By Marcia Derryberry, Editor in Chief his year marks the fifth anniversary of the Impressions Awards Student Competition, and 2012’s entrants raised their own bar by producing innovative and wellexecuted screen and digitally printed designs. Created as an offshoot of the Impressions Awards competition for industry professionals, this high school competition gives us insight into the market’s future business owners and industry leaders. And each year, we notice the talent level increasing as well. Particularly notable this year was the use of special effects such as rhinestones, large and unique placements, and multimedia designs. The winners of the 2012 competition were announced at the Long Beach Imprinted Sportswear Show (ISS) this past January. The Impressions booth was abuzz with decorators and suppliers perusing the Student Winners’ showcase, located in the booth right along with the 2011 Impressions Awards’ winners. Both seasoned veterans, market newcomers and supplier executives were impressed with the talent level displayed by tomorrow’s apparel decorators. Thank you to our judges for lending their time and expertise to this year’s competition: Christopher Bernat, Vapor Apparel; Dane Clement, Great Dane Graphics; Jeff Proctor, Lancer Group Intl.; Gustavo Serrano, Vapor Apparel; and Charlie Taublieb, Taublieb Consulting. Impressions and ISS also would like to thank the industry suppliers who sponsored this year’s competition. Their generous donations will enable these high school programs to continue to grow and lay the foundation for tomorrow’s decorated apparel entrepreneurs. Our hats go off to the following companies for their commitment to our industry’s future: • International Coatings presented the Grand Champion winner’s school with a special effects textile ink kit. • Franmar Chemical donated Textile Screen Printing Kits, which were distributed to all participating schools. Each kit has cleaning products that are nearly odorless, and safe for humans and the environment. • Gildan presented 1,100 T-shirts that were divided among the winning schools. In addition to the winners presented here and on the following pages, Impressions also recognizes the School with the Most Winning Placements, Paramount High School, Paramount, Calif., David Yakubovsky, instructor. Also, the honor of Individual with the Most Winning Placements was a tie, going to Aimee Montoya and Cassandra Myers, Paramount High School, Paramount, Calif., David Yakubovsky, instructor. Also, following the winners’ listing, read about one high school’s graphic arts program and its recent successes. GRAND CHAMPION Congratulations to this year’s Grand Champion winner, Aimee Montoya from Paramount High School, Paramount, Calif. Under direction from her instructor David Yakubovsky, Aimee took top honors for her design, “Peace,” which was a colorful, detailed design that incorporated special effects. 32 Impressions | April/May 2012
