first impressions Evolving With You his issue marks the beginning of my 25th year as an editor for Impressions. I cannot believe a quarter of a century has passed since I first walked into the publication’s offices armed with a journalism degree and dreams of working for a magazine — regardless of the subject matter. It was both luck and fate that landed me at Impressions. Magazine jobs weren’t plentiful in Dallas in the late-1980s, and I answered a newspaper ad (can you imagine?) for a senior editor position in New York — a job for which I knew I wasn’t qualified. It just so happened that the company ended up creating an entry-level editorial position based out of the Dallas office for me, and it opened up the world of garment decoration. I had no idea at the time that — while always a journalist — this industry would become as much a part of my career as it has my life. When my mentor and then-editor-in-chief, Carl Piazza, interviewed me, I was clueless about this marketplace he called “imprinted sportswear.” Little did I realize that I would evolve and grow with the business long enough to be celebrating my silver anniversary. One thing is for sure: Evolution is the name of the game when it comes to this industry that I love. Today’s screen printing and embroidery suppliers continue to streamline equipment for increased and high-quality production and create new inks, backings, attachments and supplies to keep decorators one step ahead of their competition. Business owners willing to expand their services and be more of a one-stop shop are becoming the norm, as our once-segmented marketplace embraces the multiprocess garment decorator. It also is in the digital technologies arena that developments continue to occur at rapid speed, with offerings for sublimators, digital direct-to-garment (DTG) printers, cut-and-print decorators, laser equipment operators and those providing their customers with bling designs. Digital garment decoration comes in many forms, and is a great add-on for traditional screen printers and embroiderers to add to their mix. It also is an excellent platform for those who carve a niche only for digital decorating. This special Imprinted Sportswear Shows (ISS) issue focuses on different digital decorating technologies, with feature stories by industry experts that explain what’s available in the marketplace. Contributing writer James Ortolani provides a general overview of prevalent digital processes and veteran Jimmy Lamb breaks down the differences between dye sublimation and DTG printing. DTG expert Kevin Kelly offers insight into preventing machine breakdowns and gives advice on what to do if such problems occur. Also included is a product section featuring the latest in DTG machines, computer-to-screen (CTS) equipment, print-and-cut materials, heat presses, laser cutters and more.
