For many, tailgating evokes images of grilling delicious food, throwing around the football and swigging a couple of cold ones right up until game time. I love that, too, but one of the things that I’ve recently learned to love and appreciate about By JAMAR LASTER fall Saturdays in the South is the unwavering spirit and commitment of the fans (which, I think, is short for “fanatic”). This goes beyond people merely showing support for the team by packing the stands and screaming at the top of their lungs or exchanging high-fives after a touchdown. I’m talking about fans that literally wear their support for their team favorite team. In fact, one of my favorite things to do during tailgating is watch fans stroll through campus in the fanwear that they’ve either bought, borrowed or created. Let me be clear: I’m not just talking about wearing a T-shirt with the team name embellished across the front. Rather, I’m talking about some pretty bold, imaginative shirts, pants, hats and more. For example, I’ll never forget seeing a guy dressed in pants that featured one leg that was black while the other was red, with the school’s logo running up and down each leg. I also remember tossing the football around and getting distracted by a fan in a stretchable, nylon full-length bodysuit, with no open area for the face and a school logo on the chest! (I also learned a painful lesson about not being so easily distracted when a football is being thrown at me.) Now that’s what I call a fanatic! In this issue, contributing writer Josh Ellsworth showcases a few fashion-forward styles that could help you step up your game when decorating fanwear (p. 6). These styles go beyond the status quo and the boring. Check them out, because enhancing your shop’s fanwear offerings could leave you with a bunch of fans of your own.
