I
was one of the lucky ones. I grew up in a place, time and
— probably most importantly — economy where the
decision to play sports came down to one question: Do
you want to play or not?
I remember when I fi rst decided I wanted to play Little
League football. There was something about the sport that
excited me. As a kid, I eagerly watched as many NFL games as I could each Sunday, feeling
just privileged to be able to take in the action. I was a fan of Walter Payton’s unique
blend of grace and power. And I had an appreciation of Joe Montana’s marksman-like
accuracy and cool, calm demeanor as he commanded the San Francisco 49ers offense.
So when I decided I wanted to take my talents to the local gridiron to play for the

East Point Mighty-Mights 6-year-old squad, I didn’t have to worry about my efforts
being rebuffed by my mom. I had no fear that I’d get a lecture about the state of the
economy, rising gas prices and the country’s teetering unemployment rate. It was quite
the opposite; my mom was more than happy when I was doing anything that didn’t
require her to make another grocery store run. My only worry was that I didn’t have
the fl eetness of foot that made “Sweetness” famous, nor did I have the arm of Joe Cool.
And guess what: A few months later, when I decided I wanted to play basketball, she
signed me up! After that, when I decided I wanted to try taekwondo, I got no pushback.
Sadly, many of today’s kids have no such luck. As associate editor Lauren Mitchell
fi nds in her excellent cover story, “Team Business: A Post-Recession Update,” certain
economic factors are forcing many kids into a pick-and-choose situation when it comes
to sports. And that’s impacting many decorators’ bottom lines. Interestingly enough,
though, many who target the team sports niche are focusing on things they can control,
like customer service, to still achieve favorable results as the economy works its
way back to health. And that’s a strategy that is proving shrewd and successful.
