A Marketing Plan for Team Sports From scheduling to client referrals to social media, here are a dozen ways to keep your decorated apparel shop top of mind with clients. By Faye Musselman, Contributing Writer W W hile most apparel decorators say their team sports business is driven by word-of-mouth referrals and building relationships, the competitive nature of the game is requiring them to pay more attention to overall marketing and promotional strategies. From players who are successful in the field and consultants advising from the sidelines, following are 12 tips for getting — and keeping — your business in the team sports game. 1. Be Ahead of the Game Team apparel, from uniforms to spiritwear, is obviously a seasonal business that requires scheduling. “You need to create a yearly plan and know when to talk to the teams,” says Daniel Arocho, owner of The Logo Store, a promotional products distributor in Cumming, Ga. “For winter sports, you need to plan at least three to six months out, prior to tryouts and conditioning,” he says. 2. Be Fast on Your Feet • In the team business, especially with schools, it helps to familiarize yourself with coaches and athletic directors, who may end up being pivotal to you attaining orders in the future. On the other hand, a decorator can build a reputation — and additional business — by simply being ahead of the competition with turnaround times. “We bid on new uniforms two to three weeks out, but we’ve had teams come in on Tuesday and need everything by Friday, and we can do it,” says Daniel Noel, president of American Athletic Uniforms, a full-service decorator and uniform manufacturer in Valparaiso, Fla. Noel says he charges a rush fee for garments that need to be decorated in such a short time period. 3.
