Incentive - December 2007 - (Page 6)
DECEMBER 2007 www.incentivemag.com EDITOR’S NOTE Revved Up hen writer Chris Hosford proposed a story on Rolls-Royce, I was excited. We could get a Rolls-Royce on the cover of Incentive. Now, that’s classy! But it was not to be. The Rolls-Royce in question is Engine Services in Oakland, Calif. The folks there make engines. Yes, engines, for helicopters and jets. So, I wouldn’t get to have a Rolls on the cover (preferably with me in it) but if you look at the cover now, you’ll notice something harder to come by than a fancy car on a magaJennifer Juergens on the Swarovski zine cover: Happy employees! I mean really happy crystal-encrusted Harley employees. And that’s what Incentive is all about. Maurice Carter and Brad Burkett are happy because they have a boss who empowers them. Makes them feel like part of the team. Valued. The company actually has a whole program based around their employees, called Winning Workplace. The program at the 500-employee division has achieved such stellar financial results, other Rolls-Royce divisions plan to follow suit. The story starts on page 14. OK, so I didn’t get to ride in a Rolls-Royce. But, hey, a Swarovski crystal-encrusted ladies’ Harley-Davidson is not chopped liver. I got to “ride” on the Harley at a Working Mother magazine conference where the “hog” was displayed. You see, the bike was donated by Linda Peterson, co-owner of Peterson’s Harley-Davidson in Miami, to raise money for The Women’s Alliance, a national organization of independent communitybased members who provide professional attire, career skills training and related services to low-income women seeking employment. I met the executive director of The Women’s Alliance, Nicole Wild, who is selling chances for the Harley in hopes of raising one million dollars for the organization. Wild, Peterson and consultant Thomas Cook call themselves The Power Behind the Passion, and want to help women realize their dreams of transitioning into the workforce. Readers of Incentive are invited to go to www.youreoneinamillion.org and take a chance to win The Tigertail. One dollar buys you a chance to win this amazing motorcycle, and make a big difference in someone’s life. Hey, it’s the holidays. It’s the best time to take a chance for this great charity. And who knows? You could be riding this puppy come spring. Enjoy the issue.
