BERMUDA TRAVEL An Island in the Sun Bermuda offers easy access to silky blue skies, sandy pink shores, awesome golf and rum swizzles By Anne Marie D. Lee or a recent sales incentive trip for a technology company, Linda Sharp, president and CEO of Sharp Events, an event solutions company based in San Francisco, chose Bermuda. Present on the five-day, fournight trip was an international group of 50 winners and their guests, as well as sales and marketing executives from the host company. The group stayed at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. The trip included two off-site evening events, a final night beach party with fireworks and a choice of activities—such as biking and wreck-diving—set for each day. Says Sharp, “Bermuda offers a wide variety of activities and historical sites that combine Bermuda’s unique senseof color and style while embracing their British heritage.” Bermuda has eight 18-hole golf courses, three of which are private clubs. Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club is Bermuda’s oldest golf course. Although the club is private, it is open to visitors. Situated on a narrow peninsula, Riddell’s Bay offers water views wherever you turn. Next to the cerulean blue waters and fine-grain beach sand, for many planners, the next important question is “How’s the shopping?” In Bermuda, you’ll find all kinds of shopping from department stores, boutiques, art & crafts, cigars and antiques to Bermudiana—the name for all one-of-a kind trinkets found nowhere else. P.S.: There’s no sales tax, and the U.S. dollar, which is on par with the Bermudan dollar, is accepted everywhere. F Fun at the Fairmont Known as the Grande Dame of Bermuda, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess is one of Bermuda’s best known luxury hotels. Meeting space includes over 30,000 feet of indoor and outdoor reception and meeting rooms. In addition, outside terraces, patios and gardens host as many as 500 people. Hamilton Princess includes tantalizing island cuisine from Chef Thomas Frost and afternoon tea in the hotel’s Heritage Court. “You can’t leave Bermuda without a slice of rum cake,” says Suzanne Wenz, regional director of PR for the Fairmont in Bermuda, “At the Hamilton Princess, there’s a wonderful tomato-and-banana bisque—it’s delicious. It’s just a wonderful local dish made with local ingredients.” Wenz says that local ingredients are also the focus of afternoon tea at the Fairmont, which includes loquat jam, made from loquat fruit, which is grown on the island. For families with young daughters, the hotel offers a Princess Tea, where little girls dress up in hats and pearls to chat like ladies. Guests at the Hamilton Princess enjoy shared services with its sister hotel, the Fairmont Southampton, which features the Willow Stream Spa—15 treatment rooms, roof deck overlooking the ocean—and a private beach that sits adjacent to Bermuda’s renowned Horse Shoe Bay Beach. The Fairmont Southampton also holds an exclusive partnership with Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club. Swizzle at Elbow Beach Always a treat, Bermuda’s national drink, the Rum Swizzle, is now also a treatment. The Rum Swizzle Ritual is one of several new signature spa experiences at the Spa at Elbow Beach. It entails a lively assortment of fruity island ingredients: orange, pineapple, grapefruit, lemon and lime juices, all of which contain antioxidants that are good for the skin. The experience starts with a welcoming foot ritual, is followed by a pineapple body scrub, fruit-covered bath and cocktail, and ends with a full body and scalp massage. 58 | Incentive | January 2008 |
